Starting An Online Business – Selling Your Professional Services
While most folks who start an online business plan on selling physical products of some sort, many more are gravitating to offering their services instead. With the current state of the economy, in conjunction with all the layoffs that have taken place, many have simply given up in trying to find a job. That isn’t to say they don’t have plenty to contribute, however.
Starting an online business that focuses on your area of expertise is a great idea and one that can be run right out of your home, cutting start up costs significantly. There are generally four main areas that online services fall into:
1. Professional Services
Any type of professional service fits into this category. Bookkeepers / Accountants, lawyers, advertising execs, home inspectors, appraisers, etc. In some of these cases, you’ll not only advertise online, but you’ll also conduct 100% of your business online. In other cases, you’ll advertise online and file reports online, but may actually go out on site to complete your work.
2. Organizational
In this type of business, you may run a membership site of some sort. For example, perhaps you are an expert on the stock market. You could set up a monthly subscription web site where you discuss tips for investing in the stock market, along with your recommendations for stock picks. Regardless of the topic, a significant income can be gained by running a monthly subscription site based on your area of expertise, assuming there is enough interest in the area.
3. Software
Software developers have been having a great deal of success selling various software programs online. There are huge markets not only in consumer based software applications, but in business related applications as well. If you’ve got the know how and can produce a software programs that will make life easier for consumers and businesses alike, you’ll do very well in this arena.
Many software developers offer programs or scripts that users operate via their web browser. These programs are referred to as an ASP. (Application Service Provider) They are really a hybrid between a service and product because the program uses a web site to sell a process or software that’s delivered to the customer via a web site. For example, an online payroll processing firm such as ADP. Or a company that provides an affiliate management system. Shopping cart systems are another excellent example of an ASP.
4. Creative
This is another great category for someone with creative experience. Someone who designs web sites – or various components of web sites, folks who design logos, copywriters, graphic artists, or anyone else who has a creative talent would all fit into this category. Starting an online business in the Creative category can be a very rewarding business. Not only in terms of personal satisfaction, but in financial terms as well due to the reach the Internet gives you.
While these are what I consider the four main areas of online services, you may know of another that you want to jump into. Just be sure that you sit down, and determine what your goals are so that you have a very clear picture of exactly what it is you want to accomplish with your new business. Do you research so that you understand the benefits and potential pitfalls so that you’ll have the best chance of success.
